Buffalo October 2006 Storm Gallery - Page 2

By Friday morning, the 13th, about 400,000 were without power in our area. (there's only 275,000 people in Buffalo). When the storm knocked down the trees, they took down the power lines with them on almost EVERY street. Chippewa Street, & most of downtown was much better than anywhere else because there were less tall trees to fall down, & a lot of the electricity lines are underground. Even here on Chippewa Street, we didn't lose power. But almost everyone downtown has awning, porch, or other storm damage.

Most of these pix are from Chippewa Street, on Friday the 13th, after lunch time. It was in the mid 40s F, so by this time more than half the snow we had on the ground at dawn had melted. Today, Monday it hit 60F downtown. Much more than half the households in the city still don't have electricity.

With all that snow melt, there was flooding. Many people's basements were flooding. Because the electricity was out, the basement sump pumps couldn't run. Many folks got stuck bailing the water out of the basements by the bucket... all day & night long.
