By Tuesday most but minor streets were clear, but it was hard for the work crews to get to the downed trees behind many houses... many of those trees took power lines with them. About a quarter-million people were still without electricity, some didn't have phone service and many others in the surrounding towns couldn't trust their water supply & had to boil their water somehow. Most traffic lights still weren't working.
If the storm had come two or three weeks later, after the leaves had fallen to the ground, as usual, by around Hallowen or so, it would have been just another two-foot snowfall that would have melted a day or two later, & no trees or branches would have fallen. It came now while the leaves were there to catch the weight.
Few people died as a result of this storm and few were injured. Most kids missed a week of school & most adults lost a week or more of wages. Small business took a big loss.
