On the afternoon of Thursday Oct. 12th (not 13th) that winter storm that hit most of the northern states hit Buffalo. But around here we have something called "Lake Effect" snow. That's were a storm passes over the warmer Great Lakes, & picks up a lot of extra moisture, & dumps it on the land... usually in the form of snow.
We could have been waist deep in snow by evening, but because the temps were above freezing, (mid 40s F in the day, mid 30s F at night), much of it was melting as it hit the ground... during the first few hours of the storm. But that is why we were going to have a BIG problem later. Eventually the snow was coming down much faster that it was melting. Unlike in winter, the autumn leaves were still on the trees... which gave a large surface area for that very wet, sticky, snow & sleet to stick to. Combined with high winds (but not hurricane force), it had a devastating effect on Buffalo, & the surrounding western NY state area.

Even at one of my jobs we had damage. Almost everyone's awnings & canopies where lost. Almost every tree & large bush was damaged by the storm in Western NY state. Many won't survive survive the damage. About half the trees in the area are are ready destroyed. Amazingly, one of my 30' HDTV screens didn't flinch during the storm. It looks a little beat up due to high wind damage during the summer. But it's functional enough to still use this Saturday... until I tear it down after halloween. My 30' or more outdoor screens get replaced with new ones, every spring. I make, own, & install these myself. I'll probably recoat this one, restich the edges, & store it as a back-up screen.
I always have a back up plan for everything. Even for this storm. But hardly anyone else did. So even though my home was comfortable during the ordeal, most weren't prepared or ready for it. So I got stuck saving everyone else's butt, & getting them through this. And because this is the "city of good neighbors" I hardly made much money out of it.
We almost lost this 3 story tall tree on the patio at work. It used to stand straight up. Now it's leaning a bit. We'll be watching this one during the next wind or snow storms.
